This book foregrounds the cultural identity of Madigas who live across India under different nomenclatures such as madigas, chamars and cobblers. It encapsulates Jambapurana as a representative text that extols the Madiga culture. The study also subverts the negative stereotypes attributed to this community.  It critiques religious fascism and spiritual denial in modern Dalit literature. The book makes a significant contribution to intrinsic values of human life and celebrates the emergence of rich and varied crop of of Madiga writing on the contemporary literary horizon. Comparison of Madigas with other oppressed people--African Igbos and native Americans -- further adds to the global significance of this study.

 About the Authors

 Professor Darla Venkateswara Rao is presently Head, Department of Telugu, School of Humanities, University of Hyderabad. He has published 18 books and several research papers. Under his supervision, 14 Ph.Ds and 21 M.Phil students have been produced. He was conferred on the Chancellor’s Award for his academic merit. He was also awarded “Keerthi Puraskaram” by Sri Potti Sreeramulu Telugu University, Hyderabad and “Mahakavi Gurram Joshua National Award” for his literary contribution.

Dr. J.Bheemaiah teaches at the Centre for Comparative Literature, School of Humanities, University of Hyderabad.  He has published 6 books and 2 English translations of Telugu poetry.  He has published more than 30 research papers in reputed journals and edited volumes. He served as coordinator for a UGC programme. He is presently working on his autobiography.
