The Lamp!
Evening...
A tiny flame
gently touches
the darkness.
That
becomes a lamp.
Burning itself,
it shares
its light.
That's all!
A flame
never longs
to live forever.
Its only yearning
is
to keep shining.
It is we
who look at that light
and imagine
it to be eternal.
The oil diminishes.
The wick
wears away.
Yet the flame
never forgets
its purpose.
It does not know
how many eyes
have looked at it.
It never counts
how many hearts
have found courage
through its light.
Darkness
knows this secret.
That is why
every night
it goes in search
of a lamp.
Even the ashes
know this story.
They cradle
the burnt wick
in their lap.
But human beings
see only the burning.
They remember
only what was consumed.
They forget
the light.
In the end...
The lamp
goes out.
But the light
lingers a little longer
in the eyes
that have seen it.
Perhaps...
Human life, too,
is like a lamp.
Its meaning
does not lie in
how long it burned,
but in
how many hearts
it left illuminated.
